Woodrow Russell Smith, 75, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, in Fort Worth. Born on July 27, 1950, in San Juan, New Mexico, he was the son of James R. and Mildred J. (Lasater) Smith, both of whom preceded him in death, as did his son, David Custer.
Russell was raised in Farmington, New Mexico, where he developed a passion for working with wood. Whether building log homes in Ruidoso or crafting canes from cedar posts through whittling and wood carving, his dedication to his craft was evident. He also enjoyed traveling, listening to country music, and watching western movies.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Patricia (Williams) Smith; his children, Shana Nardecchia, Tosha Smith, and Preston Smith and wife, Micayla; as well as his stepchildren, Angela VanMeter-Ford and husband, Daryl, Jeffery Hathaway and wife, Kimberly, Beverly Hathaway and husband, Paul, Brian Hathaway and wife, Candy, and Virginia Moorefield and husband, Rodney. Russell’s memory is also cherished by numerous grandchildren, extended family members, and friends.
His family and friends will remember Russell for his craftsmanship, love of the outdoors, and gentle spirit.
