Gary Lynn Whitley, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on September 5, 2024. Born on April 30, 1949, in Dallas, Texas to Paul Reid Whitley and Bernice Ethel McCoy, Gary lived a life marked by dedication, compassion, and humor. A proud graduate of Sunset High School in 1967, Gary's talent for music shone brightly as he earned letters in orchestra for his skillful playing of the viola and piano. His deep connection to the Dallas area lasted throughout much of his life, though he eventually found tranquility in retirement in Gun Barrel City, Texas. Gary's professional journey spanned 35 years as a respected radiation therapist. His commitment to his field was further exemplified by his active involvement in the Texas Society of Radiologic Technologists (TSRT), where he played a key role in monitoring and influencing legislative and regulatory matters affecting the radiologic sciences. To his family, Gary was lovingly known as "Papa" to his three granddaughters. He was a devoted father to his two children and a faithful friend to many. His friends admired him for his warm demeanor, sense of humor, culinary skills, and the kindness he extended to those around him. Gary lived with a steadfast desire to be pleasing in God’s sight and to be mindful of the needs of others. Gary was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brothers, James Clyde Whitley and Paul Reid Whitley Jr. He is survived by his two children: Jennie Allison (John) and David Whitley (Laura); and three granddaughters: Rylie Allison, Audrey Whitley, and Ella Whitley; along with a host of friends and loved ones who will remember him fondly for his contributions to both his profession and his community. In honoring his memory, we celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy of love, laughter, and service. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered. He will be interred at Smyrna Cemetery in Winnsboro, Texas later this fall and celebrated with a graveside service at that time.
