Darlus Eugene “Johnny” Mefford, 88, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026, in Haltom City. He was born August 1, 1937, in Yellow Bend, Alabama, to John R. and Nannie Beatrice (Fraser) Mefford. They both preceded him in death. Johnny enlisted in the Air Force and went to Vietnam to serve and defend his country. After his tour in Vietnam, he became a police officer in Huntsville, Alabama, and later became Chief of Police in Gurley, Alabama. He had other jobs throughout his life, such as delivering products cross-country, driving a tractor-trailer, operating heavy equipment for construction companies, and driving tour buses from Texas to Louisiana Downs for the horse races. Everything in his life was about service — service to God and service to his country. Johnny is survived by his son Terry and wife Debbie; daughter Talana and husband David; son Todd and wife Shelley; son Ricky and wife Miriam; grandchildren James, Joshua, Jamie, Jennifer, Ryan, Austin, Breanna, Sara, Ricky, Clint, Mark, Charles, Amber, and Alyssa; 20 great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Sam.
