Billy Joe Shrum, a beloved figure in the lives of many, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, in Decatur, Texas, at the age of 73, Born on November 19, 1952, in Denton County, Billy was a free spirit, known for his kind and loving nature, making him a friend to everyone he encountered.
Billy spent many years dedicated to his craft as a rope maker. His meticulous attention to detail and commitment to his work brought joy and satisfaction not only to himself but to countless others who appreciated the fruits of his labor. From a young age, it was clear that Billy was destined for a life intertwined with the art of roping. He began this journey at the tender age of sixteen, and the passion he felt for this skill carried him throughout his life. His talent earned him numerous accolades, including many belt buckles and saddles, a testament to his dedication and passion.
His legacy is lovingly carried on by his family, including his cherished daughter, Tina Wetmore; his stepsons, Corky and Jody Harper; and his brother, Clint. Billy was also a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and a great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
He will forever be remembered for his infectious spirit and the warmth he brought to everyone around him. Though he has rejoined his parents, Odis and Mary Scroggins, who have passed before him, Billy’s laughter, love, and legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a world that is a little brighter, a little kinder, and full of memories that will be treasured always.
